Khao San, between tourism, backpack and privileged

Because Bangkok is now my transit city for my Asian trip and I came back there more than a dozen times in the area of Khao San for sleeping, I thought it was necessary that I write a small article about this tourist area where Farang* are at home.

Tourism benefits, where to eat and sleep in Khao San Road, it’s here!

Khoa San, the backpacker area. We meet even a few old hippies wearing dreadlocks. Although it is far from the typical Thailand is the place to go for a budget, but not only!

It includes absolutely everything. shopping lovers, you will enjoy! Made in China’s clothes stand that each store offers the same as its neighbor, exchange and sale of used books, materials for the backpacker (sleeping bag, mosquito net …). We even made there fake documents (student card, press card, driving license) for 1,000 baht!

Night in Khao San

Pedestrian street, noisy and crowded world, the night is the time to sit at the table, drinking a glass or more, listen to live music or have a massage.

You will also find many bars to party. Alcohol galore, they offer you buckets, ping pong show, girls… Many lady boys smile at you, tuk tuks all want to know where you go and tailors will share with you some words in your language.

Opposite, the Rambuttri Village, meandering small streets lit with lanterns and lights dimmed immerse you in a relaxing atmosphere. We find the same shops but less. Here, no bars where music is too loud but lounges only.

Where to eat in Khao San ?

Side food, you will have again a wide choice between Western, thai or street food which serves meat sticks or padthai.

If you are more daring, you can also take delight of tarantulas, scorpions and worms of all kinds. Although very touristic, feel free to experiment! Just to let you know that Thai people never eat scorpion, it is just for tourists!

My favorite place to eat good and cheap Thai Food is Magic ThaiFood. The dishes are hearty for 40-50 baht. The owner is a magician (with cards) who even practiced in Vegas. He made the rounds to each table all evening. A good way to keep you from eating when you are traveling alone.

Where to sleep in Khao San ?

On Khoa San Road, the prices are a bit higher and the street is reall noisy all night long. I generally prefer to stay in Rambuttri Village or found outdated rooms but certainly at unbeatable prices. I have also found nothings equal in another part of Bangkok! 150 to 300 bahts with or without bathroom, wifi and fan.

Note that I often see negative opinions on the web such as specifying that the staff is not nice, it’s dirty, small, too warm, the bed is hard as the floor, etc! You pay a room 150 baht or 3.50 euros! So if you expect the pool, jacuzzi and small soap every morning on your pillow, you will increase your budget.

However, to make sure they have a clean (this is the minimum), I advise you not to book in advance as most good guesthouses cheap and tidy are not on Hostelworld or Booking! Those present on the other hand, are generally quite poor. So to avoid unpleasant surprises, do your research there. Everything is so focused that you will not struggle to find!

Prime location

And on the top, Khao San is also a convenient location. Located north of the old city, you will be close to most places of interest such as Wat Pho, the Grand Palace, Wat of the Emerald Buddha, the Klongs by long boat or Wat Arun. You can also walk around and see the market for amulets, the flower market, etc.

How to get there?

From downtown, you can get there by taxi for about 80 baht.

For smaller budgets, go to Victory Monument BTS accessible (the Skytrain Bangkok). From there, take bus 157, 503 or 507 for 11 or 13 baht. Tell the person in charge of the tickets that you go to Khao San Road, they will tell you when to get off. In Bangkok, you pay into the bus and depending the destination.

The bangkoktransit site, translated into French is the official website of local transport in the city. You can easily know your route and which lines borrow by selecting your destination.
